Ulster’s John Cooney will be celebrating a career year after the 2021 Pro14 season came to a close with the scrum-half topping many statistical categories. He was the league’s best in points scored (115), try assists (13), clean breaks (22), and conversions scored/missed (33/7). His performance this season earned him a place on the 2020-21 Pro14 Dream Team. This marks Cooney’s fourth consecutive appearance on a Pro14 Dream Team.

These league-leading numbers, along with a kicking success of 81% and five tries, the 4th most on Ulster this season, cemented Cooney as a key figure in the team’s successful season. Ulster finished second in their pool, only losing out to the ever-dominant Leinster. Their 64 points earned is the team’s best performance since the 2016-17 season.

Cooney has been Ulster since 2017, when he moved over from Connacht. His senior career began a decade ago with Leinster and since then, he has become the first player to make at least 20 first team appearances for three different provincial clubs. He has made 80 appearances for Ulster, scoring 689 points during his time at the club.

John will look to continue the season’s success as Ulster begin their Pro14 Rainbow Cup campaign against Connacht on April 24th.
